Tokyo Obscura: Riding to Quiet Churches and Hidden Corners on a Brompton

I brought my bike to Tokyo in the quiet days of early February—part work, part wandering. Mornings began with cold air and empty streets, wheels tracing lines through neighborhoods still waking. I rode to small stores tucked in corners, to quiet churches where sunlight spilled through high windows.

I never took a train, not once beyond the first arrival and the final departure. Everything I wanted lived within reach—forty-five minutes, maybe an hour and a half away. There’s a certain peace in traveling by rhythm rather than schedule, in letting the city reveal itself turn by turn.

Someone told me about a ride from Tokyo to Kamakurakōkō-Mae Station—the one facing the sea. Six hours, they said. I keep imagining that journey, the moment the horizon opens and the sky begins to turn gold. One day, I’d like to arrive there just as the sun bows into the waves.
